After several years of homebrewing on Austin Street in Westbrook, they decided to take the plunge. Self-financed and eager to begin, they purchased and assembled a one-barrel brewing system and got to work. Austin Street opened its doors on Industrial Way in Portland, Maine in early 2014. Since then, Will and Jake have maintained 100% ownership of their startup. Although this arrangement has its limitations, Jake and Will insist this is the only way for them to stay true to their creative roots while providing the best products possible to consumers and guests of their tasting rooms.

Our love of brewing beer started in 2009 with a home brew kit from a local home-brew shop as a cool Christmas Gift. That grew into an obsession that we finally decided to pursue as more than just a fun hobby. The experiments have been vast and grew from a stove-top kit and bucket batch, to a hand-built three-tiered gravity system, to a full-blown small nano brewing system. We source the highest quality ingredients that are available (locally as much as possible) always ensuring that our beer is fully matured before it is brought to market, and only releasing our beers when we feel they are as close to unattainable perfection as possible.

The Fat Friars Mead available at Local Centric

The Fat Friar Meadery

Mead, also called honey wine, is an alcoholic beverage that is produced by fermenting a solution of honey and water. It may also be produced by fermenting a solution of water and honey with grain mash, which is strained after fermentation. It may be flavored with spices, fruit, or hops, which produce a bitter, beer-like flavor. The alcoholic content of mead may range from about 8% ABV to 18% ABV. It may be still, carbonated, or naturally sparkling, and may be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet.

The Fat Friar’s Meadery, located in Newcastle, is a Maine farm that specializes in the creation of mead. Because our mead is made with the finest ingredients, and is never rushed, the quality and taste are of the highest standards.

Coastal Maine Popcorn  coastalmainepopcorn.com

In 2008, Julie and Paul Roberts decided that it was time to bring popcorn back to Boothbay Harbor. They opened their doors on June 7, 2008 and were absolutely astounded at the excitement that followed. In 2019 they were honored to accept the Food Producer of the Year Award by the Maine Grocers and Food Producers Association.

All of Coastal Maine’s popcorn is made by hand, one batch at a time, and hand-sifted to ensure that customers don’t end up with broken pieces and unpopped kernels. They never compromise by using cheap products or processes and work diligently to source only the best ingredients. They air pop the popcorn, rather than using oil, which makes it healthier, crunchier, and provides a longer shelf life than oil popped varieties.

Ragged Coast Chocolates  raggedcoastchocolates.com

“In 2007, at the edge of a misty forest on the tiny Maine island of Isle au Haut, Ragged Coast chocolate company twinkled into existence.” For eight years, Kate Shaffer made exquisite confections in her home kitchen, and offered them to locals and visitors from around the world at her café. Word of Kate's chocolates-made from things that grew in the forests and gardens of Isle au Haut-spread, and the fledgling business grew. In 2015, Kate, Steve and their two cats, packed up the island kitchen and moved the blossoming business south, just outside of Portland, Maine.

At Ragged Coast, all confections are made with fresh cream and butter from local farms. They buy or trade for fresh herbs, fruits, vegetables, and edible flowers with Maine farmers and gardeners met along the way-at farmers' markets, on the road, in their shops, or on their farms. They use premium teas, organic, locally roasted coffee, and whole spices to flavor their confections. And they source single origin, sustainably-grown chocolates from producers in Latin America that not only make the best chocolate in the world, but also treat the growers, harvesters, and the flora and fauna on their lands with respect.

Zen Bear Honey Tea available at Local Centric

Zen Bear

After fine-tuning the Zen Bear honey tea recipe, Lisa Ferrel, along with her husband Frank, took the honey tea to Maine’s Common Ground Fair, which focuses on sustainable food methods. They sold over 1,500 jars in just a few days. Now, along with their family, they sell thousands of jars of Zen Bear across the country each year, bringing flavor and a zen-like experience to all those who enjoy their variety of honey teas.

Most people put honey in their tea. Zen Bear does it the other way around. By infusing herbal tea in honey, the flavor is given a chance to slowly mellow, mature and improve over time. Zen Bear, headquartered in Salem, NH, strives to radiate goodness in all that they do. It’s why they use responsibly sourced ingredients and it’s the driving force in their support of Heifer International and their mission to end poverty and hunger.
